Swedish Blacksmithing
00961111
Lars Enander + Karl-Gunnar Norén in english, Paperback, 210 pages, many photos and drawings, dimensions 21,5 x 21,5 cm It’s the translation of a book about basic blacksmithing, which has been available in Sweden, Denmark and Germany since 1998 and has become the standard book on the subject. It was born out of the need for an easily accessible, but still professionally structured, description of how to hand forge and is written in the form of a dialogue between a master blacksmith and his apprentice. By combining the dialogue with nearly 400 drawings of the process steps and techniques required in blacksmithing, we’ve created a unique learning tool. It’s practically impossible to misunderstand how the projects included in the book are to be performed. And at the same time, you’ll experience the joy of being able to forge on your own! Steel is a forgiving material, that lets the smith develop as knowledge is gradually built up. But it’s also important to understand the mistakes one has made, in order to be able to go back and try it again. The process as it is depicted in Swedish Blacksmithing will help you to do this! Swedish Blacksmithing also gives examples of true peak technology, like axe making and the latest in damask, or pattern welding! The book doesn’t hedge when it comes to the problems that must be solved in the forge: tools, the use of the hearth and anvil, the characteristics of different kinds of iron and steel, the temperature, hardening. It gives directions for all the conceivable situations.

Earth Fire Iron
00961149
Alan Evans and the New Iron Age Editors: George Breeze, Lesley Greene and Mary Greensted Dimensions: 170mm x 240mm, 128 pages, paperback Earth, Fire, Iron: Alan Evans and the New Iron Age is a handbook about contemporary blacksmithing inspired by the outstanding artist blacksmith, Alan Evans (1952-2023) whose brilliant conception of a set of gates in 1980 for the Treasury at St Paul’s Cathedral, London was seen as game-changing for the craft. With contributions from leading voices in the artist blacksmith community, it provides an overview from Evans’ roots in the Cotswold Arts and Crafts movement to exciting developments in the craft since 1980 as makers and educators stepped up to the challenges and positives of blacksmithing and began to engage in constructive thinking about ways of tackling environmental issues and climate change. The book includes an overview of the important and pioneering Artist Blacksmithing course at Hereford College of Arts and an introduction to issues around commissioning new work. Case studies by seven artist blacksmiths at different stages in their careers brings all these issues to life. Earth, Fire, Iron will inspire and assist both students and established makers and open everyone’s eyes to the potential of this elemental craft.

Atelier Zimmermann - Kunstschmiedearbeiten
00961151
Umfassende Monografie zum 80. Geburtstag des Pliezhausener Kunstschmiedes Paul Zimmermann. Mit einem Vorwort von Winfried Stürzl in german and english, 210 pages, hardcover This book presents the work of the Swabian ironsmith Paul Zimmermann. Since opening Atelier Zimmermann (AZ), his studio in Pliezhausen, in the foothills of the Swabian Jura in southwestern Germany, in 1963, he has created several hundred grave markers and numerous fountains, gates, signs, and independent pieces. Zimmermann constantly challenges the boundaries of his medium and craft. He uses new technical and creative techniques to give contemporary form and meaning to traditional materials such as iron, copper, bronze, and other metals. He approaches the tasks assigned to him by exploring and slowly developing each conclusive form. Alternating between minimalistic and expressive solutions, his work is exceptional in the artisan forging production of the postwar period to the present day. Zimmerman continues to receive recognition in Germany and abroad, with international shows, including a presentation at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and publications. This book, published on the occasion of his eightieth birthday, is the first comprehensive monograph on his work, his studio, and his workshop―his life.

Metall Design international 2002
00961226
yearbook Verlag Hephaistos by Peter Elgass, bilingual german and english, 231 pages, black and white, many photos and drawings, dimensions 21 x 29 cm
Most certainly there have been easier things in the last few years than selling good and honest metal design. The reason is not a lack of individual contemporary works, but rather the fact that the education of the customers with respect to taste has been neglected. It is not a lack of money to be able to afford "luxury", it lacks the courage to purchase and show to others something special. Years ago, there were trendsetters who wanted to be different than others intentionally. They wore different clothes, they heard different music, and they surrounded themselves with new and unusual things. They did not "fit" into the anonymous mass. They were "nonconformist". If they found followers, a new trend was born. HEPHAISTOS presentS: Hans-Ueli Baumgartner (CH), Simon Benetton (I), Manfred Bergmeister (D), Helmut Brummer (D), Phil Johnson & Team (Scotland), Risto Immonen (SF), Ulrich Schmied (D).

yearbook Verlag Hephaistos by Peter Elgass, bilingual german and english, 231 pages, black and white, many photos and drawings, dimensions 21 x 29 cm
During the last few years a trend has increased, which should worry all of us. Not only have human genetic components been commercially protected by patent offices without too much hesitation – would-be design companies and sales groups helped and still help themselves unscrupulously in the “market of ideas”, not only in metal design. Not only in the creations of the experts presented in this book but also in history these “product pirates” found design examples which they claimed to be theirs. Baroque scrolls from old church gates were as unscrupulously design patented as Jugendstil elements and Bauhaus ideas. Cultureless patent guardians do not even go to trouble of checking where the designs pirates have helped themselves. HEPHAISTOS presents the originals: Leopold Habermann, Pavel Tasovsky and Jaroslav Kaspar (CZ), Olavii Osara (SF), Claudio Bottero (I), Hans Klasmeier, Thomas Gustav Kenngott, Oskar Hafen und Josef Bzdok (D).

Metall Design international 2006
00961274
yearbook Verlag Hephaistos by Peter Elgass, bilingual german and english, 232 pages, 458 colour photos and drawings, dimensions 21 x 29 cm Like good wine matures with increasing number of years, HEPHAISTOS Yearbook also matures from edition to edition. Readers all over the world may look forward to the eighth edition of Peter Elgass' "Metall Design International", because a long-cherished wish is now coming true: The brilliant pictures of works by outstanding artists and designers will be printed in four colours throughout for the first time. "Metall Design International 2006" once again meets the expectations of the book title. After a long absence, a metal designer from the United States is represented again with John Medwedeff. In actual fact, it has been his turn for a long time already: For more than twenty years, he has been presenting large sculptures for the public space as well as small works which have an effect rather more in obscurity. Two exciting "new-comers" are Adam Stachowicz from Poland and Patrick Boutillier de Saint André from France. 35 years old Adam Stachowicz from Gdansk is a "designer in trade" in the truest sense of the word, because he is not afraid of handling materials, such as glass, wood or stone, although he started his career in the metal field, and he is also an exceptionally gifted draughtsman. The works of Patrick Boutillier de Saint André, Lunel, France, demonstrate how an artist has found his way from two to three dimensions, consistently developing abstract painting into space and taking the step to large sculptures. The forth contribution in the book describes a team, i.e. the family of the Austrian Herbert Gahr, who works in his workshop in the city of Bischofshofen with his sons Stefan and Robert. The interplay of metal and colour in their works was the decisive factor that Peter Elgass seriously had to deal with four-colour print. This fact also applies for Werner Ende, stainless steel artist from the German town of Mönchengladbach. He follows today's trend because he uses his material to reflect nature in its various shades in the polished surfaces. Next, Peter Vögele from the Bavarian town of Murnau, metal designer and artist blacksmith of the first order and of old school, has been in pure metal design along with his brother Franz and his nephew Markus for many years already. And finally, Peter Schmitz from the German town of Hildesheim is a child of the first hour for HEPHAISTOS publishing company. The first article about him appeared in the very first edition of HEPHAISTOS, the international magazine for metal design, in 1992. "Metall Design International 2006" now finally presents what extremely modern projects he has produced over the years playing with metal and light, for example. Works of Peter Schmitz meanwhile can be found in collections of well known museums all over Germany.

Metall Design international 2007
00961275
yearbook Verlag Hephaistos by Peter Elgass, bilingual german and english, 232 pages, 458 colour photos and drawings, dimensions 21 x 29 cm All the eight individual designers fulfill a maximum of creative claims and are unmistakable in their use of forms. Albert Paley: He belongs to the most well-known and prominent metal designers these days. Terrence Clark: His forge-works are characterised by the "English school", straightness mixes with traces of English humour. Brad Silberberg: Since over 25 years he works with metal and is one of the leading blacksmiths in the USA. Lars Larsson: Contrasts which create an area of conflict characterise the works of the Swedish metal designer. Jan Odvarka: The young, Czech Turnov-graduate introduces his amazing large oeuvre to a broad public for the first time. Michael Haase: He has no fear of contact with modern technology or craftsmen from other trades, whom he consults when the unusual is to turn into the normal in metal. Torsten Theel: Three factors turn his work into modern metal design: "The knowledge of handicraft, traditional and contemporary techniques, the gift to see and understand natural shapes, and the own imagination." Lothar Klute: A belligerent designer and fervent critic of current developments in the blacksmiths´ trade shows his concept of modern metal design. The carefully investigated texts are in German and English. They give detailed information about the very different philosophies and open up the way for the readers to the understanding of their works for house, garden, park, urban space and church area. Take a look into the book in the next tab
