Large fire-making kit
Set consisting of a fire steel, numerous flints, and a tin can filled with tinder.
Packaged with detailed instructions in a beautiful leather pouch.
A strike-a-light kit typically comprises three essential components: a striker (often flint), a fire steel, and tinder. To generate a spark, the fire steel is struck firmly against the sharp edge of the striker. This action scrapes tiny particles from the fire steel. The friction from this process causes these particles to ignite instantly, creating sparks that can reach temperatures up to 1500 °C.
These hot sparks are then directed onto a receptive material known as tinder, such as char cloth (carbonized cotton fabric) or even certain types of fungus like true tinder fungus. The tinder catches these sparks and begins to smolder. Once the tinder is glowing, it's typically placed into a "tinder nest" – a bundle of easily ignitable material. By carefully introducing air, often by blowing gently, the smoldering tinder can then be coaxed into a full flame.
