Which hearing protection is suitable specifically for blacksmiths?

Forging involves extremely high noise peaks from power hammers, impact tools, and anvil ring, as well as constant noise from blowers and bench grinders. High temperatures and dust are also common:
For continuous work & heat: Earplugs (made of silicone or foam) are ideal as they do not press under welding helmets or safety glasses, are extremely lightweight, and do not cause heat buildup around the ears.
For extreme noise (power hammer): For massive noise exposure from large hammers, high-attenuation earmuffs (SNR 33 dB) are recommended.
For intermittent tasks: Banded earplugs can be quickly removed and worn around the neck during short breaks when you are not actively forging.

Which hearing protection is best suited for my work environment?

This depends on the type of activity and the level of noise exposure:
Earplugs (disposable/reusable): Ideal for continuous noise, high temperatures, or when combined with other protective gear (e.g., safety glasses or welding caps).
Banded earplugs: Perfect for areas with variable noise levels, as they can be easily taken off and worn around the neck during breaks.
Earmuffs: Optimal for extremely high noise levels, frequent donning and doffing, or environments where earplugs in the ear canal feel uncomfortable.

Is there special hearing protection for children, and what should be considered?

Yes, children's sensitive hearing requires special protection, as the eardrums and sensory cells are even more susceptible to noise damage. Keep the following points in mind:
Special earmuffs for children: Sized earmuffs are the best choice for kids. They provide enough space for small ears and exert less pressure on the soft cranial bones.
No standard earplugs for young children: Adult foam earplugs are generally too large for children's ear canals and can cause irritation or be inserted too deeply.

What does the SNR rating mean for hearing protection?

The SNR rating (Single Number Rating) indicates the average noise reduction value of a hearing protector in decibels (dB). For example, a product with an SNR of 34 dB reduces a noise level of 100 dB at the ear to approximately 66 dB.

Is the highest SNR value always the best choice?

No. The goal is optimal attenuation, not maximum isolation (overprotection). Too high a rating can prevent you from hearing important warning signals, spoken instructions, or machine operational sounds. The target residual sound level at the ear is ideally between 70 and 80 dB.
We have carefully pre-selected suitable options for you here.

Which standards must hearing protection fulfill?

Professional hearing protection is classified as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE Category III) and must be certified according to the following European standards:
EN 352-1: Earmuffs
EN 352-2: Earplugs (disposable and reusable models)
EN 352-3: Helmet-mounted earmuffs

How long can earplugs be used?

This depends on the material and construction:
Disposable earplugs (e.g., PU foam): Designed for single use or a single shift, as dirt and sweat accumulate in the material.
However, they can typically be worn for 1 full day.
Reusable earplugs (e.g., flanged silicone/plastic): Can be used hygienically for several weeks or even months with regular cleaning using mild soap and water.
