The Belgian Coticule is a unique natural sharpening stone from the Belgian Ardennes, known since 1625.

Its effectiveness relies on naturally embedded, obtuse-angled garnet crystals that precisely polish the metal during sharpening.
To use the stone, simply moisten it with a little water; there is no need for lengthy soaking.
Thanks to its fine composition, it is ideally suited for high-quality knife blades and the finest woodworking tools.

What is the Belgian Coticule and what is it made of?

The Belgian Coticule is a 100% natural whetstone from the Belgian Ardennes that has been mined since 1625. It consists of volcanic ash, slate, and an extremely high concentration of the finest garnet crystals (up to 43%). These garnets provide the unique, precise sharpening effect during the grinding and honing process.

Why is a combination stone of this type (e.g., CotPyr) used alongside the Belgian Coticule?

The Belgian Coticule is primarily a polishing and finishing stone for achieving a fine, razor-sharp edge (grit approx. 5000–8000).
With very dull blades or damaged edges, the initial grinding process takes a long time if done solely on the Belgian Coticule.
A combination stone like the CotPyr therefore unites two specialized stones in one:

1. Pyrenees stone side (grit approx. 1200):
Used to pre-grind dull blades, remove nicks, and quickly establish a solid base level of sharpness.

2. Belgian Coticule side (grit approx. 5000–6000):
Subsequently handles the fine grinding, removes the burr, and polishes the edge for maximum edge retention and a razor-smooth finish.
With this combination, you cover the entire spectrum of knife maintenance—from repair grinding to razor-sharp edges—without needing to buy or soak multiple separate stones.

Are there other versions or sharpening stones available?

Yes, there are other versions and different types of sharpening stones. However, we have made a carefully curated, proven selection here that allows you to sharpen all the essentials—a method that has been used for over 400 years.

What is the grit of the Yellow and Blue Belgian Coticule?

Since these are natural products, the grit cannot be defined as precisely as with synthetic sharpening stones. The Yellow Belgian Coticule corresponds roughly to a grit of 8000 (FEPA), while the Blue Belgian Coticule has a grit of approximately 5000 to 6000.
We have made a small but excellent selection for you.

How do you use the Belgian Coticule correctly?

The stone does not need to be soaked for hours before sharpening. Simply wetting the surface lightly with water is sufficient. Rubbing the knife or a rubbing stone creates a fine abrasive slurry (known as "honing paste")—along with the released garnet crystals—which accelerates material removal and ensures a proper grind or polish.

Should oil or water be used with the Belgian Coticule?

The Belgian Coticule is used exclusively with water. Oil must never be used, as it clogs the natural stone's fine pores and prevents the formation of the necessary abrasive slurry.

What advantages does the Belgian Coticule offer over synthetic sharpening stones?

Unlike synthetic stones, the obtuse-angled garnet crystals sharpen the metal without deep scoring or burr formation. It offers extremely rapid material removal combined with a super-fine polished finish, is ready for immediate use without soaking, and has an exceptionally long service life.

Which blades and tools is the stone suitable for?

The stone is universally suitable for all steel tools and cutting edges: straight razors, woodcarving tools, chisels, hunting knives, high-quality kitchen knives, as well as outdoor and pocket knives.

Does the Belgian Coticule need to be flattened?

Yes, even a natural stone can wear unevenly over the years. Flattening (truing) is easily done using waterproof sandpaper (400 to 600 grit) placed on a flat glass or granite plate. The moistened stone is then ground flat against it using a circular motion.

How do I clean...

How can I recognize an authentic Belgian Coticule?

Certificate of Authenticity: All our stones are certified.

Other identifying features of authentic Belgian Coticules:

Unique appearance:
The Yellow Coticule has a creamy-yellow to pinkish hue with fine, natural veining.
The Blue Coticule is characteristically blue-grey.

Slate backing or bonded to other natural stone:
Since the yellow or blue layer is very brittle, it is traditionally glued onto a base of black or blue slate to provide stability to the stone.

Rapid formation of abrasive slurry:
When rubbed with water, a milky abrasive paste forms immediately due to the released garnet crystals.
Protected origin:
Authentic stones come exclusively from the Belgian Ardennes (Vielsalm region).
