How heavy does a blacksmith's hammer need to be?

This cannot be answered in general terms, as different weights are required depending on the application and physical condition.
For blacksmithing with children, a lighter hammer is chosen, which often has a nominal weight of only 0.5 kg.
For heavy forming work, a larger hammer weighing 1.5 kg or more is required.

What weight is suitable for beginners?

The 1.25 kg blacksmith's hammer is the first standard hammer for many blacksmithing jobs.
The head weight is a good average for beginners and can be used for various jobs.

What weight is suitable for forging with children?

Lighter forging hammers are suitable for forging with children.
We recommend the weight class 0.5-1.5 kg.
You should have different hammers to choose from here, as every child has an individual feel for the hammer.
Too heavy is not a good idea here, as children will quickly lose interest in forging.

What do I have to look out for when buying?

Here you should make sure that the hammers are reliably hardened and have good workmanship.
There are many non-renowned manufacturers out there and the €5 hammer from the Far East can quickly blow up in your face.

How hard should a blacksmith's hammer be?

Blacksmith's hammers should have a hardness of around 56 HRC on the face and fin.
The eye should be softer.
You can also find all of this in the corresponding DIN.

Where can I buy a blacksmith's hammer?

Of course from Angele.
We value tested quality from well-known manufacturers and smaller professional blacksmiths who know their craft.
We know that this question is "strange", but Google wants it that way ;)

Can I forge a hammer myself?

Of course, but it is harder than it seems at first. Not only the forging itself, but also the hardening are crucial steps. It is also important that after heating in the fire for the umpteenth time, the carbon content drops and the hammer can no longer be hardened well.
We also have hammer blanks in our range for reworking, so there is no need to punch holes and thorn the eye.
You can find blanks here
